Fun on the water for the White's island crew
White's Island will be the setting for the regular series of summer water activities run by Youth and Sport, says Tom Smith who is charged with organising what is one of the most popular events of the summer's activities.
Sailing: Four courses will be held, catering for some 40 students per course.
Course One will be held in the mornings, Monday to Friday, from June 29 to July 21. Course Two will be held on those same days in the afternoons.
Courses Three and Four will follow a similar pattern, starting immediately after Cup Match, on Monday, August 3 and running through to August 28.
Swimming: Five half days of swimming are included in each course. Course One in the mornings, starts on June 29 and runs through to July 3. Course Two will be in the afternoons on these same dates. These swimming courses run through to Friday, August 7.
A large advertisement will run in The Royal Gazette towards the end of May and registration will probably start in early June. In the meanwhile, further information can be obtained from the Department of Youth and Sport.
ANNUAL YOUTH THEATRICAL ROADSHOW The Department of Youth and Sport will also be organising its popular Annual Youth Theatrical Roadshow, which tours the length and breadth of Bermuda in July and August.
It involves actors and actresses, singers and entertainers aged from nine to 25.
Pat Pogson will be the organiser and producer and Youth and Sports director Tony Roberts is keen to encourage enrolment in this travelling theatre. "The kids are trained in all aspects of theatre backstage and front of stage,'' he says. "They can be performers or they can be technicians.'' OUTWARD BOUND Mark Norman and Michael DeSilva are the two constables in the Bermuda Police who run the Outward Bound and Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and this year's activities will be held thousands of miles apart.
The foreign setting will be Aberdovey in South Wales while locally the course takes place on Paget Island, St. George's.
Says Pc Norman: "The grant we receive from the Government is vital but we couldn't survive without the private sector's support.
"The donations we receive from local firms and international companies are a vital part of both schemes.'' HANGING OUT -- Vernell Caines abseils down the side of Fort St. Catherine as part of the Outward Bound programme held over the summer.
LEARNING THE TOPES -- Police cadet Kim Bailey tackles the `Burma Bridge' on Paget Island as part of the annual Outward Bound adventure for cadets.
