DeSilva through to semi-finals
the Caribbean Development Tennis Championships in Antigua yesterday, while Danielle Downey is through to the consolation final. DeSilva lost in the doubles semi-final when she and Downey went down to Sonia Ramcharran and Lisa Fongkee Fung of Trinidad and Tobago 3-6, 1-6. Fungkee Fung had earlier in the week beaten Downey in the singles round robin. But DeSilva bounced back with a come-from-behind victory over top seed Susie Molina of the Netherland Antilles, losing 6-7 (7-4) in the first set before taking the next two sets 6-3, 6-1. DeSilva gained revenge on Molina who beat her in the round robin on Monday.
"The last two sets were a lot tighter than it suggests,'' said chaperone Zane DeSilva, Zarah's father. "They battled big time.'' Today DeSilva meets Anne Lee Bryant of Barbados in the semi-finals, hoping to repeat the semi-final win she recorded over Bryant in March in Barbados. She lost that final in a three setter.
Downey advanced to the consolation final with a comfortable 6-1, 6-0 win over Whitney Renfern of Surinam yesterday. Her opponent in the final will not be known until after a quarter-final and the other semi-final matches are played today.
Lone male player from Bermuda, Jovan Whitter, lost in the semi-finals yesterday, but two victories in the consolation would earn him a fifth place finish overall. The worst he can finish is eighth.
In the round of 16, Whitter beat Robert Belle of Antigua 6-1, 6-4 before being stopped in the quarter-finals by third seed Ryan Moseley of Barbados 3-6, 1-6.
"My game's a bit out of synch but I still believe I have another Major in me.'' -- British golfer Nick Faldo ahead of the Volvo Masters, which starts today.
