Participants used various tools and beach implements to fashion sand sculptures -- or reliefs -- on a sectioned off part of the beach. There were four categories for the competition; children, family, tourist and adult and company.

Oganiser Nicky Gurant told The Royal Gazette participants worked hard but above all, everyone had a fun day on the beach. "What we really want to work on is participation -- there were tons of spectators,'' she said. Overall, there were some 30 entries, she said.

Cianna and Kimberly Fisher took first prize in the youth category for a spiral design, while the Fisher family took third place in the family category for a biblically inspired sculpture.

First prize winners in the family category, the Matchams, are long time participants in the contest.

A shark attack design won the tourist category but (mystery) winners Pete and Betsy forgot to give their last name to organisers.

Architectural firm, Barker & Linberg, stole the adult/company category with a detailed sculpture of a man's face and hands, using seaweed to highlight facial hair and darker portions of the face.

Talented twosome: Cianna and Kimberly Fisher (above) took honours in the youth sandcastle category while Barker & Linberg (R) won the adult/company competition.
