Bermuda Sun may publish bi-weekly
week and could eventually become a daily newspaper, The Royal Gazette has learned.
In a letter to customers, Island Press Ltd. general manager Gary Taylor told them of the proposed plan.
"As part of the Island Press (Holdings) Ltd. group (incorporating Island Press Limited and the Bermuda Sun Limited), we anticipate publishing a mid-week edition of the Bermuda Sun starting sometime in 1998,'' he wrote.
"Should this prove successful, we would explore the possibility of publishing a daily newspaper, something we feel is important to the future of Bermuda.'' Island Press (Holdings) Ltd. is publicly listed on the Bermuda Stock Exchange.
Island Press prints the Bermuda Sun.
Bermuda Sun editor Tom Vesey said he was unwilling to comment to a reporter working for a competitor.
"In response to your inquiry, we are always working on new projects at the Bermuda Sun, and we are always talking about new ideas to make the paper better,'' he stated in a press release.
"Some may work out, and others may have to be saved until later ... But I'm sure you will understand why we cannot discuss our business plans with The Royal Gazette , which is one of our biggest competitors, and just might borrow our ideas and try to cash in on them.''
