be sentenced today.

Police say nine pounds of marijuana were found on Warren Pitt as he was about to board a plane to Atlanta.

The drugs would probably have a Bermuda street value of about $180,000, although the figure would be far lower in Jamaica.

Pitt, of Two Way Lane, Pembroke was charged with possession, dealing and attempting to export marijuana, or ganja as it is commonly known.

He reportedly appeared in court yesterday and pleaded guilty.

Police arrested Pitt at about 5.45 p.m. on Monday at Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, western Jamaica.

Insp. Charles Harvey, from the Airport Police, told The Royal Gazette Pitt was checking in to board an Air Jamaica flight to Atlanta when a sniffer dog alerted his handler.

The drugs, weighing nine pounds, were discovered in hand luggage which had been checked in, he added.

Insp. Harvey said Pitt, who was on his own, had been vacationing in the Montego Bay area.

"He has been in custody awaiting his court appearance,'' Insp. Harvey said.

Journalists for Jamaica's Daily Gleaner told The Royal Gazette Pitt would be sentenced this morning after admitting three counts -- possessing, dealing and exporting.

The drugs were apparently hidden in a false compartment of a black bag.

The Caribbean News Agency (Cana) said Pitt was one of three people arrested on Monday at Sangster International Airport.

The others were a 32-year-old Colombian, Oscar Munoz, and 30-year-old Phillipen Rolle of the Bahamas, who were also expected to appear in the Montego Bay resident magistrate's court yesterday.

Police said the arrests were unconnected.

In total, 4.5 kilograms of cocaine and just under seven kilograms of ganja were found in their bags, according to Airport Police.

Cocaine is valued on Jamaican streets at about 300,000 Jamaican dollars (one Jamaica dollar equals approximately 2.85 US cents) per kilo while ganja has a local street value of in excess of 4,000 dollars per kilo.
