Sailor plans solo world trip
Paris may be able to help.
Mr. Paris is planning to become the first Bermudian to race around the world single-handed in September 2002.
In a bid to raise cash for the epic 27,000 mile journey, Mr. Paris is considering allowing Bermudians to have their name painted on his 40-foot yacht, Bermuda Solo , for $50.
"The boat is going to be on the Island for four or five months before the race and for anyone who wants to support it in the spirit of adventure, it's a good idea,'' said Mr. Paris.
"It's a novelty and will allow people at a grassroots level to help in supporting this and they get their name around the world,'' added Mr. Paris, the general manager of Ariel Sands cottage complex in Devonshire.
"I could set up a stall on Front Street during Harbour Nights and have the boat moored up at the dock.'' Mr. Paris, 36, is quitting Ariel Sands at the end of March to concentrate full-time on the around the world solo race, known as Around Alone.
He estimates he will need $300,000 for the race and is looking for major corporate sponsors.
The race, which is held every four years, leaves Charleston, South Carolina, in September 2002 for Cape Town, South Africa.
The next leg is to Auckland, New Zealand, then to Punta del Este, Uruguay, then finally back to Charleston in April 2003.
