Swifts A 10-1 on the opening day of the ladies hockey season on the weekend.

Although it turned out to be a rather rainy weekend, it didn't dampen the spirits of the players as only one of the four games scheduled had to be abandoned.

Canaries sent out an early warning as, after a slow start, Andrea Parker started the scoring blitz. And once started there was no stopping the yellows.

They mounted attack after attack on the Swifts goal and by half-time were up 4-0. The goals did not end there, however, as Canaries continued their all-out assault on their opponents.

The Swallows A v Orioles A match was played in spite of a steady downpour, with Orioles coming out 3-0 winners. The first goal was rocketed in by Heidi Lynam from a penalty corner.

After half-time Marlo Smith netted the second goal before captain Lisa Ray completed the scoring. Liz Osbourne was a driving force for Swallows as both teams exhibited great determination and sportsmanship despite the conditions.

In a B League match, Canaries beat Swifts 2-1. Canaries took an early lead through Ali Cameron before Swifts quickly equalised. Lakiba Rempel scored the winner just before the half-time whistle.

In men's matches, meanwhile, Jonathan Dodd matched the achievement of Mark Ray the weekend before when he also netted five goals against Polecats in the second weekend of BHA action at Nationals.

Polecats, who started their season with a 9-0 thrashing, went down 12-0 on Sunday to Chameleons who got their season off to a winning start after a bye on the opening weekend. Supporting Dodd's five-goal effort was Bill Spencer with three, Stevie Moreton (2) and Mark Finnegan and Guy Swain with one apiece.

The match between Upstarts and National Sports Club Rebels was washed out and will be rescheduled. Chameleons are now tied with NSC Rebels on points with one win but lead the standings on goal difference.

This Sunday sees Upstarts meeting Polecats at 1.30 and Chameleons taking on Wasps at 3.00 p.m.
