Tokunbo to be offered DPP
Director of Public Prosecutions by tomorrow.
The Royal Gazette understands the Foreign Office in London has approved the Governor's nomination for the post and has given him the authorisation to make an offer.
Government House is in the process of finalising the paperwork before an offer is made to principal Crown Counsel Mr. Tokunbo, .
The appointment process was held up in October when controversy erupted over the handling of an assault case against former Progressive Labour Party candidate Rodney Smith.
Tokunbo to be offered DDP job The Foreign Office was in the process of approving the nomination for DPP, believed to be Mr. Tokunbo, when the row began.
The Foreign Office appointed London-based barrister John Roberts to look at the way the case was handled in the Attorney General's Chambers and office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The decision to review the way the case was dealt with came after Magistrate Archibald Warner, who heard the case, said someone had tried to interfere in the process.
Dr. Roberts QC concluded the case was "not handled in the customary way''.
He found contact had taken place between members of the AG's chambers and Smith, which left them open to criticism and suspicion, but there was no evidence that the process was manipulated for political reasons or to give the accused an advantage.
The selection panel was ordered to review its nomination earlier this month in light of Dr. Roberts' report.
Deputy Governor Tim Gurney refused to confirm if Mr. Tokunbo was to be offered the position or when the successful candidate would be contacted.
He said last night: "We are in the process of finalising the details of the appointment at the moment and hope to be able to put an offer to a candidate in the very near future.''
