Local travellers wishing to take advantage of American Airlines' cheap fares had to purchase their tickets by today.

But the airline has extended the time the tickets have to be purchased by until January 28.

Return mid-week fares start as low as $187 for travel to Boston, Philadelphia and Baltimore.

American Airlines is also offering a promotional fare with the resumption of its service to Boston which begins April 5.

Fares will range from $174 for travel on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to $212 for travel between Thursdays and Mondays until June 17 if the tickets are purchased by February 28.

With taxes and other fees, the tickets will cost up to $237 for weekday travel and $272 for weekends. There are minimum and maximum stay requirements of three and 30 days respectively.
