Senate postponed because of lateness of 9 Beaches’ documents

The Senate is not sitting today because of a lack of time to consider a new lease for the 9 Beaches resort.

The 9 Beaches development has hit another hurdle as today’s Senate meeting was postponed because Senators weren’t given their documents early enough.Plans to lease public land at Daniel’s Head, Sandys, to developers IRC Sandys, for 240 years, have been on hold since passing through the House of Assembly last December.Twice before Christmas the proposal failed in the Upper House as Senators complained they hadn’t received adequate information about it, amid concerns Bermudian land could be given away for too long. The Senate was due to resume today to debate the matter but it has now been delayed for at least another week because Opposition Senators said they hadn’t been given long enough to assess details of the lease.United Bermuda Party Senator Michael Dunkley told The Royal Gazette: “From the very beginning in the Senate, it’s been a dog’s breakfast.“Unfortunately, after being adjourned for the best part of six weeks, we only got the information on Monday and we had 50 pages to look through. We asked for more time and Senator [David] Burch agreed to postpone.”The lease is intended to pave the way for an $80 million project Tourism Minister Patrice Minors says is vital to the Island’s success as a tourist destination. However, in December, Government Senate leader Sen Burch twice opted to “rise and report” progress on the lease after complaints it had been haphazardly put together, with Independent Senator Walwyn Hughes describing it as “the sort of lease you wouldn’t sign yourself”.Sen Dunkley said Sen Burch’s willingness to have the matter dealt with in a timely fashion undermines Government’s initial claims it needed to be urgently pushed through. But he is optimistic progress can finally be made next week, saying that at first glance it appears the lease is in “much better shape”.
