Commissiong: Election was called too late
The Progressive Labour Party is strongly positioned to take back Government, according to MP Rolfe Commissiong. But he called the PLP’s December 17 loss to the One Bermuda Alliance “heartbreaking”.“After getting to the point of grabbing the holy grail and winning a seat, it was very difficult to do, at a time that the party was losing the government,” Mr Commissiong admitted.Noting that a branch chairman had been quoted calling him “unelectable” in his bid for Constituency 21, he said: “I thought The Royal Gazette would have run another headline saying ‘Commissiong is Electable’, but it was not to be.”The tipping point for the PLP loss was “the fact that we missed at least three windows to call an early election after Paula Cox took over the leadership as Premier”, he said.“What cost us the election was that it was called too late. I was of the view it needed to be called before the worst of the recession could take effect.“That, more than any other factor, ultimately cost us. There was a decline in turnout, and too many of our people were feeling the effects of the economic downturn.”However, in his bid against One Bermuda Alliance candidate Jeff Baron, Mr Commission said voters saw “my nearly 20 years of progressive advocacy and activism in the community as reflective of my authenticity and commitment to the community and Bermuda”.He added: “They also were prepared to reject the attempts by others, including political opponents and some elements in the media, to demonise me or define me in a negative fashion.”Of the new government, he said: “We have to give credit to the OBA. They were able to win nine seats, most of which came from the PLP.“But we still can’t forget this represents one of the narrowest election wins in decades. The country is virtually evenly divided in the aftermath of that election.“As Opposition Leader Marc Bean said, both sides must put differences aside and work together in the best interests of Bermuda.”
