A guest speaker from the prestigious Reading Styles Institute in New York will be on the Island to present a seminar on identifying children's different learning styles.

The method of teaching recognises that different children learn in different ways and through different styles. For example, while some youngsters find things easier to understand when presented visually, others may be more suited to grasping ideas through auditory or tactual methods of teaching.

The seminar, which is open to both teachers and parents, will help educators recognise which methods of teaching are best suited to certain individuals.

The seminar is part of a plan by the Bermuda International Education Council to set up a centre for the study of learning and teaching styles. Currently educators can only gain a doctorate in the subject by attending St. John's University in New York. It is hoped that a centre for the course will be established in Bermuda later this year.

Sandys Middle School principal Melvyn Bassett, who has already introduced the programme into his school, said: "With the concern in our community with reference to literacy this seminar is important in promoting literacy skills and the identification of learning styles in one go.'' "This is a popular concept that has been used in Bermuda in the past and we're trying to see if we can revive it.'' Mr. Bassett added that he hoped the system will eventually be adopted by both the private and public school system.

Saturday's seminar starts at Mount St. Agnes Academy at 9 a.m.
