Progressive Labour Party representative Rolfe Commissiong has been elected as MP for Pembroke South East, Constituency 21. He beat Jeffrey Baron of the One Bermuda Alliance by 385 votes to 293.Independent candidates Tillman Darrell and LeYoni Junos trailed behind with 36 votes and five votes, respectively.Mr Commissiong won 53 percent of the vote, and Mr Baron 40 percent.The Opposition candidate significantly narrowed the gap between the two parties in what has traditionally been a PLP stronghold. In the 2003 election, the ruling party had 70 percent of the vote and in the 2007 election it had 68 percent of the vote.Mr Commissiong, who has never been a Member of Parliament before, said: “It was a good clean fight. It’s a great victory for myself and the PLP. I want to offer heartfelt thanks to the constituents of 21 who have placed their confidence and trust in the PLP and my candidacy.”Mr Baron said: “Obviously, I’m disappointed, but I have congratulated Rolfe Commissiong and I thought it was a good fight. I told him that I’m going to hold him to his promises of working hard for the people of Pembroke South East. They are beautiful, they are smart, very, very decent people and I’ve made a lot of good friends over the last eight months.”Mr Darrell was not present for the count and did not return a call for comment afterwards. Ms Junos said: “To me, it’s indicative of the party system. If I had been the PLP candidate, I would have been victorious because people vote along party lines.”There were 11 spoiled ballots in the latest poll. Voter turn out was 62 percent — the same percentage as the last election.
