The 24-year-old is in serious condition in hospital after the incident in the early hours of yesterday.

A Police report said the man was injured after an altercation with a gang of men at the junction of Church and Court Streets at 5 a.m.

He suffered serious head and facial injuries in the incident, in which a glass window at the Bank of Bermuda was smashed.

He was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and later transfered to the Intensive Care Unit.

The attack followed an earlier fracas between the man and the gang. Police said he was chased through Joell's Alley before he was caught outside the bank.

Police, who have set up a major incident room, are appealing for witnesses to the incident.

A spokesman said: "It is believed a group of people were at the scene when the fight was taking place and others may have witnessed the earlier incident.'' Anyone with information is asked to call 295 0011.

Two Sandys Parish men, aged 27 and 28, have been arrested in connection with the incident. They are currently being held in custody pending inquiries.
