Hotel under investigation
employee was advised against admitting to Immigration authorities that he would be working there.
The revelation came in the House of Assembly yesterday when Shadow Home Affairs Minister Alex Scott produced a letter from former Newstead Hotel general manager Steven Jones to an application for a student placement for the summer.
In the letter, dated February 11 of this year, Mr. Jones advised the applicant: "As a helpful hint, when you enter Bermuda, you will be asked by immigration what you are doing here? "Your answer should be: `I am here in Bermuda on a Hotel Student Summer Exchange Programme'.'' In the letter Mr. Jones stressed: "Do not mention the word work. I say this because it creates all sorts of unnecessary paperwork and headaches for you and I.'' In the House of Assembly, Mr. Scott asked Home Affairs Minister Quinton Edness if he was aware of the matter.
Mr. Edness said the Immigration Department was investigating the matter and that it might result in prosecution. He added that the tone of the letter disturbed him.
Earlier, Mr. Scott said Mr. Edness often took a beating on the subject which was deserved.
He said businesses and the Immigration Department knew Bermudians were fed up when it came to this subject but people were still being taken advantage of.
