BUEI could use your help
Whether driven by an interest in marine life, or the idea that your efforts could help develop a facility of educational and scientific merit, the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI) could use your help. Although there has been some positive response, in order to operate without exhausting volunteers or the tiny staff of full-time and ancillary workers, greater numbers are needed. "We have a need for people with all kinds of interests and skills,'' explained volunteer co-ordinator, Karen Jones. "For a programme that's only been in place for a couple of months, we've had a really good response but we're going to need a larger number of volunteers. We have a very good comprehensive programme in comparison with some other facilities on the Island and we're looking for as many as possible -- people who just want to help out on the computer, those who want to come three days a week, those who only want to be involved in special events or projects. We're trying to find something for everyone.'' The Institute, said Mrs. Jones, needs people willing to serve as exhibition hall guides and gift shop assistants more than anything else. "But we're continually recruiting people in all areas. Even people who work through the week, we can use them as help on weekends and evenings, in the convention hall for example, or with special events such as the Family Fun Day.'' One of the difficulties encountered, she said, was brought on by the time of the year during which the BUEI is opening. "It's very difficult opening in the summer. Lots of people are away on vacation and there those who don't work, but are busy because their children are out of school and home for the summer. We are not taking children under the age of 14 even though we're getting a lot of parents calling looking for things for the children to do during the summer. Until the programme is further developed, however, we're a bit limited on that front.'' Persons wishing to do volunteer work for the BUEI can contact Mrs. Jones at 297-7257, or through e-mail her -- Karen. BUEI at intl-com. Although only a couple days old, the Institute's web page has already generated volunteer response. All volunteers will be interviewed and placed in areas which interest them, she said, and, no matter where placed, each will undergo a training seminar. "There will also be a facility familiarisation, and on-going training for new volunteers as they come in,'' she added. "The wider the base we have to pull from, the less the strain on those volunteers that we have and the people who are working here.''
