The newly-formed Bermuda Foundation for the Arts (BFA) announced $150,000 had been raised for the group.

One of the Foundation's trustees, Louise Jackson, said the group hoped to provide the kind of assistance available to people involved in sports and academics.

"There are very few avenues for anyone in the arts to get any help,'' said Mrs. Jackson.

Fellow trustee, Ruth Thomas, agreed: "Arts are a vital part of any community,'' she said. "And artists in Bermuda need any help they can be given.'' The trustees applauded the US Consul General Robert Farmer for his support and being the "brainchild'' of the initiative.

And they also thanked the Bank of Bermuda, the Christan Humann Foundation, and other donors.

Mrs. Jackson said the Foundation hoped eventually to provide scholarships, but needed further development and donations before this could be realised.
