Hawes, Griffith stay on course for final
of the Bermuda Ladies Amateur Championships at Mid Ocean Club as friends Lisa Griffin and Lee Ann Vogel battle in one of the semifinals and defending champion Reggie Hawes takes on Bonnie Tyler in the other.
Bermuda's remaining hopefuls, Jena Mylrea and Dolly Winwick, bowed out of the tournament yesterday to leave the championship title to be decided by the overseas participants.
Favourite Hawes, the two-time champion, finally got by Sally Newi one-up in their championship match yesterday while Tyler stopped Mylrea two and one in another match that could have gone either way.
Griffin and Vogel both won by more convincing margins, Griffin stopping Winwick seven and six and Vogel getting by Hannah Steel six and five.
Hawes takes on Tyler starting at 8.02 a.m. with Griffin and Vogel following behind them at 8.10. The winners meet in the 36-hole final tomorrow.
In yesterday's first flight semifinals Claudette Gottsegen beat Molly McNichol three and two while Nonie Reynders beat Valerie Nearon by the same score.
Gottsegen and Reynders will meet in the final tomorrow.
The first flight consolation final on Friday will be between Joyce Craig and Marlene Jones following their semifinal triumphs yesterday. Craig beat Joan Cutchins five-and-four while Jones edged by Nancy Palmer one-up.
The championship flight consolation will be in its semifinal stage today with Helen Stovell taking on Shirley Wildi and Diana Diel going up against Lynn Cook.
