Baroque, Jazz -- and a little magic thrown in too

Alliance Franc uaise des Bermudes is hosting a candlelight concert at Verdmont tomorrow featuring music for voice and harpsichord drawn from the great Baroque works of Italy and France.

Baritone Bernard Levasseur is the soloist, and Luc Beause mjour is the harpsichordist. Monsieur Levasseur enjoys an international reputation as a master of French song. A frequent visitor to Bermuda, he has won the hearts of audiences at previous Alliance Franc uaise events.

Mr. Beause mjour is a recording artist with 12 critically acclaimed CDs to his credit. His performances are known for their expressiveness and elegance.

The programme, to include works by Scarlatti, Montiverdi, Rameau and Bach, will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets (members $30, others $40) are available at Opus Encore, the Bermuda National Trust headquarters, or by telephoning 291-4758.

The price includes wine and hors d'oeuvres.

A new exhibition opens at the ACE Atrium Gallery tomorrow. Entitled `Bermuda Work, Life and Landscape', it will feature the work of anonymous 19th century photographers. The exhibition will continue through April.

March 15 marks the official opening and dedication of the spacious new Bank of Bermuda Foundation Art Suite in the senior school at Saltus Grammar School .

Named after its primary benefactor, the Art Suite was built at a cost of $350,000, with funding coming from donations to the school's Saltus Appeal campaign.

Following the 9 a.m. assembly and 9.30 a.m. opening and dedication ceremony, a student art show and refreshments will take place in the Art Suite.

The art curriculum at Saltus prepares pupils to sit the British General Certificate of Secondary Education examinations, the criteria for which are rigorous and demanding. The new Art Suite, with its flexible folding display wall, enhances the emphasis Saltus has always placed on art.

Earmark March 24 for the opening of well-known local photographer Graeme Outerbridge's exhibition of black and white original silver prints at Hamma Galleries, 1 Lane Hill.

Entitled `My David', it will feature a mixture of scenes both abstract and literal, and include a portrait of Mr. Outerbridge's son David.

This weekend marks the tenth anniversary of Charles Bascome's Evening of Jazz, and the concerts at City Hall on Saturday and Sunday evenings promise to be memorable. Both performances will feature the Christian McBride Band whose members include jazz saxophonist Ron Blake, multi-percussionist Terreon Gully; modern jazz musician Peter Martin, and band leader and bassist Mr. McBride.

Joining the visiting artists will be Bermudian singer Terry Lynn Thompson, who currently works with keyboardist Tony Bari at the Elbow Beach Hotel.

On Saturday night patrons will be treated to a reception in City Hall lobby after the show.

CMB Enterprises is forming the Charles Bascome Music Scholarship Fund which will allow a young Bermudian to attend the famed Berklee College of Music in Boston to further his or her musical education. A free magic show for Bermuda's youth featuring visiting international master magician Victor Diamond and comedy juggler/magician Will Roya, plus Bermudian female illusionist Lady J, will take place at The Annex on Saturday from 1.15 p.m. to 1.45 p.m.

Preceding the demonstration, prizes will be presented to winners of the Touch of Bermuda Magic colouring competition which was jointly sponsored by Bermuda Magic and The Phoenix Stores.
