Accounts clerk stole from hotel

Twenty-three-year-old Shekiah Denise Washington pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court yesterday to stealing approximately $5,050 on August 30 last year from the Grotto Bay Hotel in Hamilton Parish.

She also pleaded guilty to altering the deposit slips belonging to the hotel.

Crown counsel Veronica Daley told the court that Washington worked as an accounts clerk at Grotto Bay Hotel.

Around the time in question, the accounts supervisor noticed that the deposits were several hundred dollars short.

Washington was arrested.

She was apologetic, promising the hotel to pay back the money. However, the money has not been recovered.

Washington yesterday told the court that she stole the money to help her grandmother pay for her grandfather's funeral.

Senior Magistrate Will Francis ordered a social inquiry report for a February 9 sentencing.
