Conner leads the way

Danish Day Regatta for offshore classes of yachts led to an usually large turn-out when 18 boats participating in Sunday's event staged by the Bermuda Offshore Cruising Association.

Conner, who was at the helm of Skippy Lewis' Alexis , proved to be as sharp as ever and easily led second-placed Penny Simmons over the finish line.

A fresh westerly wind, clocking to the north during the course of the day, provided a thrilling situation as the boats approached the starting line in Hamilton Harbour.

Conner opted to start on the southern end of the line hard up against the dock of the Newstead Guest House with Simmons in High Energy right below him.

As it turned out this was to be a race between Conner and Simmons all the way to the last leg when Conner pulled away as the yachts made their way down the harbour to the finish line.

Conner crossed the line 90 seconds ahead of Simmons with Derek Ratteray in Taxi and Francis Carter in Circe trailing two minutes behind. Simmons won Class two on corrected time though.

The heavy weather took its toll on the smaller yachts with first to first to finish, Neil Coupler's Delphinus holding his time against the fleet. In Cruising Class, Monetary (Less Crane) retired to leave the way clear for Nicky Dill in Dillightful .

In the I.M.S. class Alexis was top yacht overall.

The first three finishers in each class were: Class I: 1. Alexis; 2. Circe; 3. Tonka.

Class II: 1. High Energy; 2. Alexis; 3. Lullaby.

DENNIS CONNER -- Enjoyed an ocean victory aboard Alexis.
