Bromby poised for Euro glory

yesterday with a pair of spectacular performances to land him in second place overall heading into today's final two races.

A third-place finish in yesterday's first race, followed by a victory in the second race puts Bromby and crew Lee White in excellent position to win the 69-boat regatta.

Bromby once again needed to overcome a pair of slow starts -- he is having trouble adjusting to the European style of starting -- but he used the light winds to his full advantage.

"It's going quite well,'' Bromby understated during a telephone interview following yesterday's races on Lake Starnberg in Germany, where the regatta is taking place. "We're only a few points away from first place overall and if we continue to sail well, maybe we can win this thing.'' Bromby and White have mastered a new game plan for the event, mostly out of necessity since "there's less emphasis placed on boat speed than in other regatta. Tactically, it's really quite tricky.'' He compared the surprising wind shifts to the Great Sound in Bermuda, although "the shifts are much more violent here.'' Leading the way is hometown favourite Hans Vogt, Jr., who stumbled a bit yesterday with sixth and eighth-place finishes but retains the lead on 15 points overall. Bromby is second on 24 with Sergey Khoretskiy of Minsk, Russia, in third with 34 points. Khoretskiy was first to cross the finish line during yesterday's first race and he finished third in the second race.
