Ex-coach urges increase in ages
players on the Island has won the backing of a leading softball coach.
Ken Pitcher, who trains the Island's under-23 fast-pitch squad, believes that up to half-a-dozen players in the over-15 age category are good enough to warrant further consideration by Major League sides such as the LA Dodgers.
"The YAO took over the reins when the US forces left and they have to be given credit for that. But players are coming up through the ranks and at 15 are being put out to pasture,'' said Pitcher, a former Island baseball coach.
"With this situation with the LA Dodgers we have to get the YAO to take it a step further. It doesn't have to be all at once. They could take the age groups up a year at a time.'' Pitcher, who moved to softball after his son became too old to play baseball, added: "When I heard about the Dodgers' interest I was ecstatic. I can think of five or six guys right now who would be worthy of at least an evaluation.'' "Who knows what could happen, but we have to try. Ten years from now we might be able to look back and say we were instrumental in helping a Bermudian kid win the World Series.''
