With the 1994 ICC Trophy Tournament in sight, the odds are limited overs play will be installed for the league programme after a three-year experiment with Open cricket.
The Royal Gazette polled a number of the Island's leading players and they are heavily in favour of such a switch with some going as far as to suggest that the board also looks into having two leagues.
Former Bermuda captain Arnold Manders was perhaps the most vocal on the final point. "I not only favour limited overs but I would like to see us return to the Super Eight league,'' he said. "Cricket is far more entertaining when you have the best eight teams in a league competing amongst themselves. As things stand now the bottom teams are not even fielding full teams.'' Manders' view on the switch to limited overs is shared by 11 of the 14 players contacted with immediate past Bermuda captain Allan Douglas and Allen Richardson of St. David's preferring the stay with the Open system while Southampton Rangers skipper Ricky Brangman is undecided.
The board will hold its prize presentation for the just completed season tonight at Warwick Workman's Club (7.30) at which time Western Stars will be crowned league champions for the first time and the most valuable player will announced.
There are a number of players who have excelled this season and the MVP could come from anyone of the following: incumbent Arnold Manders, Wendell Smith, Charlie Marshall, Glenn Smith, and Albert Steede with Jeff Richardson and St.
George's spinner David Adams among the long shots. For full transcript of players' comments, turn to Page 20.
