Island joins pet passport list
to the Pet Travel Scheme.
The scheme, which allows dogs and cats meeting certain conditions to enter the UK without quarantine, has been in the works for almost two years, and now includes Islands such as Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Barbados, Fiji, Hawaii, Jamaica and Singapore.
Baroness Hayman, Minister of State at the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAFF) said: "Since it began in February 2000, the Pet Travel Scheme has proved immensely popular with pet owners with 14,580 animals now admitted under the scheme.
"I'm delighted we're extending it to these 28 further destinations ahead of schedule.'' she added.
And continued: "There are enormous benefits for pet owners and their animals in using the Scheme and this will open up those advantages to many more.
British expatriates and members of the armed forces serving abroad will, I know particularly welcome extension of the scheme.'' Dogs and cats entering the UK on flights from rabies free islands will have to travel as cargo in a container bearing an official seal.
The application of the seal gives assurance that the animal has not been exposed to infection during the course of the journey.
