For PRIDE Bermuda has brought in a US expert to help youngsters cope with the pressure to try drugs, alcohol and smoking.

Young people can join the "Smoke, Dope, and Hope'' conference which is more of a party than a conference workshop, the brainchild of drugs consultant Thomas Walters III.

It is designed to teach young people how to cope in situations where alcohol and drugs are present.

"It shows them the special challenges with peer pressure and alcohol, tobacco and drugs bring,'' Mr. Walters said. "They'll learn how to react at a party.

There will be some role playing and music for atmosphere.'' "Much of the messages (about drugs) now are doom and gloom,'' he added.

"They will be involved in the process, rather than it being a strict lecture.'' The second day of activities and workshop sponsored by PRIDE Bermuda begins with registration at the Sonesta Beach Hotel.
