Dill's skills delight coaches
the highlights of Wolves Sports Club's tour of the Blackbird Soccer Camp in Pottstown, Pennsylvania.
The 14-year-old soccer wizard repeatedly bounced the ball off his feet, head and other extremities a total of 6,128 times before allowing it to touch the ground. Dill shattered the previous standard of 2,065 which he established at the camp last year and in addition he also won a penalty shooting contest.
Endless hours of practice in his backyard contributed to Dill being able to perfect the craft. And this discipline has also helped him on the field where the youngster vice-captained a Bermuda Select team in this year's Bermuda Youth Soccer Cup tournament.
This year's overseas venture by Wolves was their third visit to the region.
Each day saw nearly 80 kids awakened at 7.30 a.m. to be put through their paces until 10.00 p.m. Instructors from various universities were on hand, with discipline the key word.
Wolves coach Vince Minors said that instructors were impressed with the youngsters' ability. "They said that the Bermudian kids have a lot of potential. But they tend to have a lazy attitude and this camp really pushes them.
"We're also looking at scholarships and this has opened up contacts for us.
The ultimate goal is to allow them (the kids) to use their tools to get over and get the education they need. These youngsters are the pride of our community and that is what we are stressing at Wolves...they are the foundation.'' In addition to Dill, others leaving their mark were Michael Benjamin, who won the Under 10 dribbling competition; Lashun Dill, who captured prizes for dribbling and ball juggling in the Under 12s; and Quincy Burgess, who was top marksman from the penalty spot in the same age group.
Southampton were forced to dig down and come from behind to defeat Island Rangers 2-1 and advance to the semifinals of the Kenny Thompson Seven-a-Side Soccer tournament at Southampton Glebe.
Second-half strikes by Cory Simmons and Sheridan Ming wiped out an earlier penalty by Ranger's Dwayne DeRosa.
Meanwhile, Team Champion had no such difficulty as they overcame the challenge of Youth Select 3-1.
Champion scored twice in the first half through Otis Steede and Raynell Lightbourne while Shawn Simmons made it a three-goal margin soon after the break. Pulling one back was Lionel Furbert, but it was too little to late as Champion advanced to the next round on Tuesday where they will meet Team Iraklis at 6.15 p.m.
Southampton will face Dandy Town in the other match at 7.15 p.m.
