Woolridge booted from House
CORRECTION Honourable C V (Jim) Woolridge In a report of Parliamentary proceedings which appeared in the Royal Gazette on Saturday, February 24, 2001, we stated, in connection with an exchange of words between the Honourable C V (Jim) Woolridge and the Honourable Renee Webb, that "it is thought she accused Mr. Woolridge of making enough money out of a previous Government project to buy a car''.
It has been pointed out to us, and we accept, that what in fact she said was that Mr. Woolridge had made enough money out of a private project to buy a car.
We apologise to Mr. Woolridge for any imputation that he had used his political office to make financial gain, which imputation would have been wholly unjustified in the circumstances of the case.
Shadow Minister of Works and Engineering Jim Woolridge was ordered to leave the House of Assembly last night after he refused to apologise over a remark he made to Telecommunications Minister Renee Webb .
The two became embroiled in a very short-lived tit-for-tat row between themselves as Opposition Leader Pamela Gordon was addressing the House.
Ms Gordon was suggesting Government cut back their own expenses when Ms Webb got up to defend her Government.
Ms Webb is thought to have made a comment to Mr. Woolridge, leading him to retaliate.
It is thought she accused Mr. Woolridge of making enough money out of a previous Government project to buy a car.
To which he is believed to have responded by calling her "a piece of garbage''.
However, because their row was an aside to the debate by Ms Gordon, the Speaker of the House Stanley Lowe did not appear to hear Miss Webb's remarks and only ordered Mr. Woolridge to apologise.
He refused, and so was ordered to leave the chamber immediately.
