Youth team suffer third straight loss

CONCACAF soccer tournament in Trinidad, going down 1-0 to the Dominican Republic in a match they were reportedly unlucky not to win.

After dominating play, Bermuda, who suffered heavy defeats to the United States and Costa Rica, were undone by a goal against the run of play early in the second half. The result left Bermuda at the bottom of their group.

"It was an excellent performance, they outplayed the team,'' said head of the Bermuda delegation, Gregory Grimes.

"They (Dominican Republic) only had two shots, one which hit the post in the first half and the other that went in in the second half.'' The second round of the competition, involving the top four teams, begins tomorrow with the first of the round robin matches. The teams involved are group winners Costa, Rica, Canada and Mexico and the best of the second place teams, United States, who were beaten by the Costa Ricans 3-2 on Thursday night. The top three advance to the Youth World Cup in Egypt next year.

The Bermuda squad leave Trinidad tomorrow morning and will spend the night in New York before returning to Bermuda on Monday.
