Youths hold lunch to honour the elderly
A girls youth group recognised the elderly last weekend with a luncheon at the Wesley Methodist Church.
Bermuda Girls in Training and adult volunteers catered a luncheon for 130 elderly people, many of whom attended the church service honouring seniors.
Eight young ladies of the group worked Friday night through Saturday and into Sunday -- moments before the luncheon began.
Betty-Ann Jones, adult volunteer and group counsellor, said: "Last year was Year of the Elderly and we didn't do anything then.'' But she said the group was determined to put on a function and it coincided with the Wesley Methodist Elderly Service perfectly.
The group is affiliated with the church but includes young girls from all denominations and schools.
Bermuda Girls in Training, or BGT, have been in existence for some 55 years, teaching and developing young ladies.
Mrs. Jones said the Christian overtures of the group had begun to scare some young ladies away but organisers can see numbers rising in the future.
The girls paid special tribute to a pivotal instructor and mentor who kept the Bermuda Girls in Training alive, Margaret Godwin.
Luncheon entertainment included performances by the all male choir Ambassadors and surprise door prizes and raffles.
