against the clock when he leads the field into tomorrow's annual British-American Half Marathon.

But with a cash bonus of $2,500 on offer for anyone who can duck under one hour, eight minutes for the 13.1 mile course, Smith might be tempted to step up the pace if conditions are right.

"I could sure use the money,'' joked Smith yesterday.

"I'm in good shape but these days I'm really just running to keep fit. I haven't set myself any goals.

"On Sunday I'll be thinking about winning, but I won't be thinking about the time.'' Tomorrow's race, starting at 9.00 a.m., takes runners from the East End School in St.George's to the finish line outside the British-American offices on the corner of King and Front Streets.

Smith is currently Bermuda's half-marathon record holder, having clocked 1:09.21 in 1993 when the same race finished at Elbow Beach Hotel.

His closest competition tomorrow could come from Brett Forgesson who recently enjoyed a top 100 finish in the 27,000-strong New York Marathon where he was timed in 2:35.46.

Late entries will be accepted tomorrow up until 8.30 a.m. at an increased fee of $15.

KAVIN SMITH -- will pick up a $2,500 bonus if he can win tomorrow's half-marathon in under two hours, eight minutes.
