Men facing assault charges
officers were rushed to hospital following violent clashes with youths.
Three men are expected to face assault charges next week in relation to two incidents that took place outside the National Stadium during the Bermuda School Sports Federation Secondary School Track Meet on Thursday.
The assaults were the most serious of a growing number of incidents that have taken place at the annual event in recent years.
Just before 11 a.m. two women Police officers were attacked as they attempted to evict a 21-year-old man from the stadium on suspicion of drugs possession, Police spokesman Inspector Coghlin Gibbons said.
A violent struggle ensued as the man punched and struck out. Meanwhile, members of the public held back crowds of agitated students.
One officer received facial bruising -- the other a sprained wrist.
The man was later found clutching a substantial amount of suspected drugs.
Two hours later, outside the stadium's Roberts Avenue entrance, a hostile crowd chanted "kick him, kick him'' as two men attacked a Police officer leaving him bruised and with a broken nose.
The men set about the officer after he stopped a 16-year-old man for a traffic offence. The youth became abusive and then violent, punching the officer in the face as they wrestled on the ground.
Another man held back a Police cadet who came to the officer's aid as students poured out of the stadium to watch. Charges have not yet been laid in connection with the two incidents, Inspector Gibbons said, but it is expected three of the men will face assault charges next week.
