Best responds to criticism from club president
Island's Under-20 national squad if they believe they are good enough.
Bermuda's Technical Director was responding to a letter written by Boulevard president Lou Matthews that criticised selection of the squad this week, excluding all of his club players.
"I have to do what I think is best for the country,'' said Best. "I don't know how many players they think they have at Boulevard but I am not going to be able to pick everybody.
"If they feel that they have players good enough to represent Bermuda well both on and off the field of play then I want them to please send them out. I am only picking what I see and who I know. I will accept them if they are good enough, but they will have to commit themselves to training.'' Best assured that eventually it would be his decision whether any player was good enough to be included in the final squad.
But said he welcomed the Boulevard president's reaction, although he wondered if his club coaches had made the club aware of the conversation that took place with the BFA and all of the coaches at the start of the season.
"It's a positive sign to have this sort of response. It's also nice to know that we have got somebody to respond because we haven't been getting any feedback from the clubs or their coaches. This shows that somebody is worrying about the players,'' added Best.
"I have always said that coaches should send their players to train with us if they feel anybody is good enough to make the squad. When I called in all of the coaches at the start of the season I told them that I would miss a few of the players, but if I did they were to send some to train.
"My position hasn't changed in the least, the offer is still open. At the end of the day I will still pick my own squad, but I would welcome any player who a coach feels is talented enough to compete for a place in any of our national squads.'' See Sports Mailbox below.
