Bermuda lose in consolation final

Canada finished up with the BFA International Youth Tournament as they started, with a comprehensive victory over their hosts, while earning third place overall.

Meanwhile, Bermuda failed to live up to the promise of their last two performances -- both 2-2 draws against United States and Glasgow Rangers -- and finished last in the quadrangular tournament.

Three goals in the space of 13 minutes highlighted a torrid, sustained spell of attacking soccer mid-way through the first half by the Canadians and confirmed victory for the visitors.

During the period Alfredo Valente scored twice, while Jeff Sousa notched the other to rock Bermuda, who appeared lackadaisical in their early approach.

Making their intentions known from the outset Canada, with perhaps the most attractive style of all the teams in the competition, controlled the opening moments with their fluid, deliberate style and it was only a matter of time before they were able to open the local team's defence.

The first instance came after 17 minutes when slow reaction by the Bermuda back four allowed midfielder Tim Taylor free reign inside the penalty area.

Taylor was allowed to turn uninhibited and shoot only to have goalkeeper Nigel Burgess parry the effort, but Valente was there to slam home the rebound from close range.

Ten minutes later the lead was doubled when a swift counter-attack caught the Bermuda defence on the backpedal, Serge Epoh springing striker Sousa free and the latter able to surge into the area before unleashing a low drive that went in off the right upright.

Valente rounded out the scoring in the 30th minute, smartly heading home a right wing cross from Greg Campbell.

The second half witnessed Bermuda showing much heart as they attempted fight back and were able to control more possession, although not quite able to convert it into goals.

A black spot came for Bermuda as captain John Barry Nusum was forced to hobble through the later stages of the second half with a right groin injury.
