St. George's and Bermuda stars Dean Minors and Clay Smith could find themselves launching professional careers overseas in the near future.
Both have had initial talks with managers of rival English regional league clubs and await confirmation on their being taken on as foreign players, without pay to start with.
Smith is hoping to latch on with Banwell of the Newcastle area while Minors has `feelers' out at a nearby club.
Last night Smith expressed optimism at his prospects of being able to pursue a career in cricket.
"I think it would be a great opportunity for both of us to go over there,'' he said. "We talked to both managers, but haven't finalised anything yet.
"It would be an opportunity to go over there and hope scouts from other (county) clubs would maybe pick us up. It would be like a stepping stone.'' The standard is said to be a notch higher than that witnessed in Bermuda, with both teams loaded with young talent in the under 29-year-old bracket.
Former Bermuda national cricket coach Doug Ferguson has been most instrumental in providing the opening for the duo, recommending them to the aforementioned clubs.
Ferguson is currently employed as Italy's national coach.
However, it will likely not be all fun and games if Smith and Minors are accepted as they would need to find alternative employment that allows for them to train and play in matches.
Pay may be low -- at least initially -- but Smith was hardly concerned about maintaining the lifestyle enjoyed in Bermuda.
"Money really isn't the issue,'' continued Smith. "It's the opportunity and money doesn't matter.'' Minors was unavailable for comment and the name of his prospective club is unknown.
