Accused begs to be released
released from custody over the Christmas holidays fell on deaf ears yesterday.
Suja Amon Muhammad -- who admitted brutally attacking a man -- made a lengthy to Senior Magistrate Will Francis to be allowed to work during the Christmas holiday.
But Mr. Francis told Muhammad he had to balance both his rights and the rights of his victim, Charles Christopher, who is now in King Edward VII Memorial Hospital's intensive care unit in stable condition.
Muhammad was remanded in custody until January 5 when Mr. Francis expects an update on Mr. Christopher's condition.
Senior Crown counsel Brian Calhoun told Mr. Francis that Mr. Christopher, 38, had been taken off a ventilator but doctors thought he may have suffered brain damage in the attack over a drugs deal.
Muhammad admitted on Monday to beating Mr. Christopher and causing grievous bodily harm during an argument late on Saturday, December 13.
On Monday Mr. Francis heard how Muhammad was arrested by Police near the scene of the attack outside the Il Palio restaurant.
Muhammad told Police the fight broke out after he had asked Mr. Christopher to buy him some marijuana.
Mr. Calhoun said Muhammad claimed he gave the injured man $50 for the marijuana and some as change and a tip.
Muhammad caught up with Mr. Christopher and kicked and beat him so forcefully he was rolling about the ground unconscious.
Police arrived just in time to see Muhammad trying to put Mr. Christopher in a large trash bin.
While on Monday, Muhammad apologised to Mr. Christopher, yesterday he was concerned about his family and an "immoral society''.
Muhammad said: "I came to Police truthfully and sincerely. I'm self-employed and without me working there is no money coming in for my wife and three children.
"How could we sit here and decide my destiny without consulting me? Yes what I did was wrong, but I also feel a doctor that performs a surgery is fondling with the evidence.'' Minutes later, Muhammad said: "I stand here as a Muslim. Please give me my bail. Let me defend my rights and go back to my family.'' And kneeling, he said: "I have suffered a crucifixion. But today I don't expect mercy from such a morally blind and morally corrupt system.'' Mr. Francis interrupted Muhammad and further remanded him in custody while awaiting further news on Mr. Christopher who's injuries include a fractured skull, broken jaw, and severe bruising to the body.
