Early leaders look to draw clear
matches in the Premier Division Open Championship, should continue their promising start to the season tomorrow when they take on bottom pair PHC and St. David's respectively.
However, so tight is it at the top that any one of four teams could be leading the standings after this weekend. Cuts and St. George's are tied on 25 points while defending champions Stars have 24 and Bailey's Bay 22.
Cuts meet PHC at Somerset while St. George's travel to St. David's to play their neighbours. And the games could present an opportunity for Cuts and St.
George's to open up a slight lead over third-placed Stars who face a tricky encounter against Police at Police Field.
Police, with draws against Willow Cuts and St. George's in their first two matches, face defending league champions Stars knowing that a victory could confirm them as serious contenders for the title. However, in order to win this match they will have to bowl their opponents out, something they couldn't achieve in their first two matches.
While Police are winless after two draws, St. David's, too, will be chasing their first win of the season. In the absence of senior players such as Allen Richardson, James Pace, Lionel Cann and Graham Fox, the Islanders have taken the opportunity to groom youngsters Chris Foggo and Rudell Pitcher, both of whom have had encouraging starts to the season.
Former captain George Cannonier came out last weekend to lend his experience to the bowling department, sharing the new ball with Pitcher against Willow Cuts and bowling 13 tight overs for just 32 runs. But still what they need most of all is a victory to lift team confidence.
PHC are already looking out of their depth in the top division, having lost their first two matches by big margins to Bailey's Bay and last season's promotion partners Southampton Rangers. And again Cuts should prove to be too strong for them tomorrow.
Rangers, however, won't find Bailey's Bay so easy to push around and on the small confines of Southampton Oval this contest could produce plenty of runs.
In the First Division, promotion favourites Devonshire Rec. take on Flatts at the Rec. in the top match while Hamilton Parish meet Social Club at Sea Breeze Oval. The International Youth Team play Somerset Bridge at White Hill and Cleveland entertain Somerset at Wellington Oval.
Two First Division Overs Competition matches are scheduled for today with Hamilton Parish taking on the IYT at Sea Breeze Oval and Warwick playing Somerset at Southampton Oval.
St. George's begin their search for a third straight Knockout Cup title next Saturday when they play Willow Cuts at Wellington Oval. Cleveland, who St.
George's beat in a thrilling final last year, are away to Social Club in the first round which has eight matches.
KO Cup draw: Police v Southampton Rangers; St. David's v Western Stars; St.
George's v Willow Cuts; PHC v Flatts; Devonshire Rec. v Somerset; Social Club v Cleveland; Bailey's Bay v Hamilton Parish; Warwick v Somerset Bridge.
