Parliamentarians would be subject to twice yearly tests at their own expense if Ms Gordon's proposal is backed.

The motion, put down at the start of yesterday's House of Assembly session, could be debated at the end of the month.

She said MPs would be asked to chip in $10 a month to a special fund because the Opposition had no powers to draw from Government coffers for any of their proposals.

Ms Gordon told The Royal Gazette : "We want to lead by example.

"We recognise we have a very significant drug problem in Bermuda. We know it has a devastating effect on families and on society.

"We also know that many people believe that those people up on the hill talk about setting laws concerning illicit drugs but some of them use it themselves.

"I don't believe any Member of Parliament uses illicit drugs themselves. This will show to the general public when we bring in a law it's in the best interests of the community.

"This will show the direction the Country must go in when we speak of the ills of drug use.

"We are hoping to get the support of Government members. They have no reason not to support it.'' See Monday for further coverage of yesterday's House of Assembly session
