Search on for Testimonial guest
several world-class players about the possibility of them coming to the Island for this year's fifth annual event. But officials are so far unwilling to disclose who's on their shopping list.
Spokesman St. Clair (Brinky) Tucker said those contacted included players of prominence from the Caribbean although they had also been in contact with English players.
The event will be held at Lord's, St. David's on September 25, starting at 11.00 a.m. and played under the same 40-overs format as a year ago when Ian Bishop of the West Indies was the invited guest.
"It's a bit too early to confirm anybody so far, but the committee is going out of its way to ensure that the Bermuda public once again will be able to watch a game which will feature a prominent Test player -- whether currently playing at that level or having just retired in recent years,'' said Tucker.
"The main thing is that we will endeavour to give the public a quality event, just as we have fortunately been able to accomplish in each of the previous years.'' Tucker indicated that he would have liked to have seen top South African Test player Darryl Cullinan, now coaching in the Island, become involved in the Testimonial but previously arranged commitments call for the player to leave at the end of August.
According to Tucker, this year's honourees are Ronnie Osborne, Arnin Smith and Carl Simmons with proceeds once again going to the Bermuda Cricket Board of Control's development committee.
Test players previously brought to the Island for the event include Phil Simmons, Gus Logie and Joel Garner of the West Indies and Phil DeFreitas of England.
Bermuda Cricket Board of Control president El James said: "The Testimonial committee continue to play a leading role in assisting our youth programme and we are hoping that the public will give the event good support and similarly play a role in helping us.''
