New alderman sworn in

He fills the position left vacant by the death of Alderman George McDonald Smith last month.

Mr. Conyers, the sole nominee, was sworn in at City Hall by the Mayor of Hamilton, the Rt. Wor. Cecil Dismont.

Mr. Conyers said he was looking forward to extending his 21 years of service to the Corporation, and outlined some of the schemes and ventures on the city's agenda.

"We have got some major projects which we must continue to look at,'' he said. "One of them, of course, is the problem of parking in the city of Hamilton.

"We have applied to the Development Applications Board for final approval of the three-storey car parking at Bulls Head car park, which is a major project that we are trying to get sorted out with the technical officers at the Department of Planning.'' In addition, the new Alderman said the Corporation was working to implement some of the recommendations put forward by the 1992 Barbera Report on the docks.

Mr. Conyer's Common Councillor seat will be filled at a later date.
