Rangers aiming for another upset

First Division tomorrow, though Vasco might just be a little bit nervous about their match-up with Southampton Rangers at BAA Field.

It was on November 2, 1997 that Rangers, with four straight losses to start the season, handed the then leaders Vasco their first defeat in the league with a 2-0 result at Southampton Oval.

The two teams come into this weekend's match in similar form, Vasco being the only unbeaten team in the First Division and Rangers winless in the league in four outings stretching back to November 22.

Vasco striker Dwight Basden may be doubtful after limping off in the Bermuda match against Antigua on Tuesday night, while Clay Smith will be missing, having returned to school abroad.

Village will be ready to take over sole possession of first place should Vasco slip up. But their derby match against Devonshire Cougars could be a tricky one if they take their opponents too lightly. Cougars are making a fight of it in their bid to avoid relegation and were unlucky not to take all three points against Rangers in their last outing, conceding a late equaliser in a 2-2 draw.

Cougars are trying to keep at least one team above them within their reach as they need to climb another place in the standings to clear the three relegation places. Presently Somerset Trojans in seventh place are just three points ahead of them.

Somerset play their weekend game tonight when they host Devonshire Colts in a clash of mid-table teams. Colts had a good win over Boulevard last weekend and will be looking for at least a share of the points to stay two points ahead of the Trojans.

It's looking increasingly likely that Hamilton Parish will be one of the relegated teams. They looked at odds in their last outing when goalkeeper Cymande Davis was ejected for handball outside the penalty area. That means Parish will have goalkeeping problems with Davis ruled out of the match at Wellington Oval against his former team, Dandy Town.

Boulevard are finding themselves with a major relegation battle on their hands. And Wolves, still needing a few points themselves to be assured of safety, won't be handing them any favours in their important match at St.

David's.

Boulevard have won just once in the league and are six points away from climbing out of the bottom three. If Trojans win tonight then that gap will increase by another three.

In the Second Division, PHC should continue their promotion push with maximum points against Ireland Rangers tonight.
