Car buyers cash in on second-hand market
market.
Since second-hand car licensing became effective in April, 238 cars have been purchased by first time buyers. The legislation was introduced to help people who could not afford to buy new cars.
The figure contrasts to 107 new cars bought by first time buyers during the same three month period.
Minister of Transport the Hon. Ralph Marshall said: "We have observed an increase in the number of second hand cars being licensed during the past few months.
"Of the total number of private cars licensed by Transport Control during April, May and June, second hand cars represented 118 (seven percent), 97 (eight percent) and 140 (nine percent) respectively of the total number of vehicles licensed.
"We are pleased to see that through the second hand car market a quantity of usable cars are being recycled thereby allowing for greater utilisation of existing vehicle resources.
"We are also benefiting through the reduction of foreign exchange estimated to be in excess of $1 million monthly.''
