And they predicted it would develop into a tropical storm by this morning.

The Bermuda Weather Service issued its first advisory at 6 p.m. last night for Tropical Depression One which, due to weather east of the Island, was likely to become Tropical Storm Arlene overnight.

The depression was 475 nautical miles east-southeast of Bermuda or at latitude 27.6 degrees north and 57.5 degrees longitude west.

The depression, with winds of 30 knots, is past its closest point of approach to Bermuda and is not a threat.

It is travelling at 11 knots to the northeast. Its central barometric pressure is 1010 millibars.

A weather spokesman said last night: "Forecasters at the Miami Hurricane Centre expect it to develop into the first named storm overnight. We will be watching it for the next couple of days.''
