Smith upset over omission

the Bermuda Cricket Board of Control if he continues to be "jerked around.'' The 20-year-old left-hander has been left off the three selects to face the West Indies Board Select later this month despite a fine start to the season, which has seen him score three half-centuries already.

Smith is a member of the national squad but has not trained since the Pakistan tour, which is why he was not considered for either the President's XI or Bermuda, but he fully expected to be on the Under-25 side that he captained against Derbyshire in April.

"I have been going through some personal problems and had not been training,'' said Smith yesterday. "I had a phone conversation with (BCBC president) Ed Bailey and told him.

"I gave the BCBC a letter that explained that I still wanted to play for Bermuda but I was unable to train. I am very disappointed not to be included in any of the games.'' Then Smith issued his veiled threat. "They have been jerking me around for a while now and I'm getting tired of it,'' he said. "There is going to come a time when they will want me to play and I will not be interested.'' Smith believes that his letter was read to the top guns on the board, so he could not understand why he could not get consideration for one game.

"No one informed me of anything after I gave in the letter,'' he added. "I was really looking forward to playing against the West Indies team, at least in the Under-25 team. And they can't say they left me off because of not training. I'm in the national squad and some of those guys picked in the Under-25 team aren't.'' Smith said his disillusionment dates back to the Barbados tour in March when he was ruled out by `injury'.

"I had an injury but I trained all the time and did a little something even if I couldn't go full out. And before the team went to Barbados I was ready and they still didn't pick me.'' Smith made 23 in his debut appearance for Bermuda against Pakistan on May 8 but was a no-show the next day at Somerset Cricket Club when selected as a reserve.

"They knew I was injured,'' he explained. "I came off the field with an injury. They asked in the changing room after the game if anyone was hurt and I told them that I was. Then when I got to the game later in the day they approached me to ask why I didn't show up as a reserve.'' Janeiro Tucker of Southampton Rangers will lead Bermuda's International Youth Tournament challenge in Denmark next month.

Tucker, the top bowler in the 1991 tournament in Canada, will be supported by clubmate Kwame Tucker with fast bowler Garry Williams, also of Southampton, the other returning member.

The tournament will run from July 10-20 with Bermuda competing against the host country, Zimbabwe, Canada, Holland, England and Ireland.

Former Bermuda captain Gladstone Brown will coach the 13-player squad while Ellsworth Christopher is manager and Wilton Smith assistant manager.
