Cougars face giant task at St. John's
tomorrow when Dandy Town entertain Devonshire Cougars at St. John's Field.
In what shapes up as a classic `David versus Goliath' match-up, with Town having seized control of the Premier Division from long-time leaders North Village, while the boys from The Den have their hands full trying to get out of the cellar, the home side enter as firm favourites.
Early returns on the direction Andrew Bascome was leading the St. John's Road club may have been sketchy, however there is little question now as to the muscle the dreadlocked coach's crew possess. Strong in defence, creative in midfield, and lethal among the attacking third, Town, while not unbeatable, have the complete package.
Just ask Somerset. The Trojans last week felt the full brunt of the juggernaut, being swept off the pitch by the marauding swarm, and there is little reason to believe Cougars will not get the same treatment.
Cougars, likewise, enter on the tails of a convincing triumph, however their 3-0 result is diluted by the fact that it came against a poor Southampton Rangers outfit with little hope of avoiding relegation to the First Division.
Despite the tireless efforts of coach Edgar Smith, who took over midway through the first half, Rangers continue to spiral along on a futile mission, with but one win and a draw from eight matches. This week sees them travelling further west to Somerset Cricket Club where they will come up against PHC, another side that has fallen on hard times as of late.
The defending league champions, after leading the pack during the early stages, have fallen into mediocrity, so much so that coach Sammy Swan has seen fit to delve into his own closet and dust off the boots in an effort to change flagging fortunes.
Just down the road at White Hill Field, Devonshire Colts can maintain their position as chief challengers to Town when they entertain Somerset, holders of the second-worst defence in the division.
And with last season's top poacher, Aljame Zuill, having rediscovered the scoring touch it may turn out to be a long afternoon for the west enders.
In First Division action the top match takes place at Wellington Oval, with second-placed Ireland Rangers hopeful of making it a worthwhile easterly trek to face leaders St. George's, who have looked vulnerable as of late.
Paget, who had their promotion plans derailed by Rangers last week, have another dicey tie this time around, with a suddenly dangerous Boulevard the opposition at White Hill Field.
