Students get unique glimpse into the world of a secretary

East End Primary students from the school's Junior Secretarial Programme received on-the-job training of sorts last week at Appleby, Spurling & Kempe.

The students, aged seven to ten, had an opportunity to observe "experienced'' legal secretaries at work.

East End Primary formed the programme after the school participated in AS&K's Guidance Counsellor and Principal presentation this past September.

The programme, which was designed to expose young people to the secretarial profession, has an equal amount of boys and girls taking part.

The children are given a roster of duties and the school staff have set out clear expectations which include answering the telephone, taking messages and delivering mail to teachers.

Upon completion of the programme each student will receive a certificate and become a member of the Junior Secretarial Club.

East End Primary principal Cathy Bassett said she expected the programme to continue next year. She also said the new members would be trained by current members of the programme.

Mrs. Bassett said she was hopeful the programme will become a positive influence on the development of Bermuda's future workforce.
