Kirkland shines in US

In a frustrating light air series, only four races took place in five days with Bermuda's Zan Kirkland placing 11th overall after finishes of 15th, second, third, and 15th again.

One of the races was cancelled when Kirkland was lying third just 300 yards from the finish.

Among those competing in the 257-strong fleet were youngsters from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Canada, Brazil, US Virgin Islands and Colombia.

Lawson Williams from the Sandys Boat Club, who prefers heavy conditions, had finishes of 43-20-26-17 for 62nd overall while A.J. Black (46-24-17-24), Zane Pedro (65-18-62-20) and Alan Frith (47-53-63-66) all from Government's White's Island sailing programme, placed 72nd, 125th and 178th overall respectively.

Ben Wicks (73-39-68-62) of Sandys Boat Club, placed 191st.

The focus now shifts to the North American Championships in Bermuda's Great Sound starting on August 18 when 25 Bermudian sailors face 50 from the US, Mexico, Canada, Venezuela and Ecuador.
