breaking and entering with intent to steal.

Tariq Wolikraam, 42, admitted unlawful entry to two Pembroke residences, but denied his motive was theft.

"I've never stolen anything from anyone,'' he told Senior Magistrate the Wor.

The court heard that on September 11, a resident of North Shore Road returned home to find a window screen tampered with. While calling the Police, the man heard noises coming from his neighbour's residence, and went to investigate.

He saw Wolikraam leaving the second residence, and with the help of a passer-by, apprehended him.

Wolikraam told Police that he had been drinking at Ducking Stool Park earlier, and was only looking for " a place to rest'' when he entered the houses.

"When I realised somebody lived there, I left,'' he said. "Next thing I know, two guys jumped me.'' Wolikraam, who admitted he was drunk when the offence occurred, said that he was sorry for what happened.

"When I get the rum in me, I go into a different kind of state.'' he told the court.

Mr. Francis included an alcohol treatment programme as part of Wolikraam's sentence.
