PLP urges Bermudians to help the Bahamas

financial aid to the Bahamas, which is still recovering from the destruction wreaked by Hurricane Andrew in August.

Shadow Minister for Works and Engineering Mr. Walter Roberts will be flying to the Bahamas this weekend to take part in a CPA Conference, and is planning a side trip to the outer islands of Eleuthera to assess the damage and recovery efforts.

Eleuthera was the hardest-hit of the islands, sustaining millions of dollars in damage. Thousands were left homeless by the storm, and funds are desperately needed to rebuild.

Mr. Roberts said he feels the media's focus on the devastation in Florida and Louisiana has diverted Bermudians' traditional concern for sister islands in crisis. He has urged "a more concentrated effort to support the relief fund set up at local banks by the Bermuda Red Cross''.

In order to ensure proper delivery, contributors are requested to clearly write "Bahamas''on their checks and deposit slips when making a donation.

Mr. Roberts was told by Bermuda Red Cross director Mr. Frank Gamble that his counterpart in the Bahamas has requested money above any other aid. The funds are needed to reconstruct over 1,000 homes destroyed by Andrew.

The Rhythm of Life Foundation will hold a fundraiser tomorrow to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Andrew in Florida.

The fundraiser at the Oasis Club will feature some of the island's best known bands and comedians. It starts at 4 p.m. and ends at 3 a.m.
