Senator's assailant receives a further year's imprisonment
A man sentenced on Wednesday to 24 years in jail for armed robbery and sex assault involving a Canadian Senator and two friends was back in court on Thursday.
And Anthony Ricardo Richardson, 24, was sentenced to a further 12 months at Magistrates' Court after admitting a 1996 break-in on the same day he raided the house being used by the vacationing Senator.
But the sentence handed down will run concurrently with Monday's jail term, meaning he will not spend any extra time in jail.
Before sentencing, Richardson, described in court as a prisoner at Westgate, said: "I already have enough time to go over certain aspects of my life and I don't think I will be coming back to any more courtrooms. I just want to get this over with so I can better my life.'' Richardson admitted breaking into the then-Hunt Club in Smith's Parish on August 12 last year with intent to steal.
The court heard the accused, a former employee of the bar, smashed a toilet window to get in because he knew the alarm system at that time did not cover the toilet area.
Prosecutor Sgt. Phil Taylor told Senior Magistrate Will Francis that Richardson damaged doors and a safe during his search before the alarm went off and he fled empty-handed.
Richardson was sentenced on Wednesday after pleading guilty to serious sexual assault and three counts of armed robbery.
Richardson broke into a Southampton home on August 12 last year armed with a 12-inch knife. He confronted Canadian Senator Don Oliver, a female and a male friend, terrorised them for an hour then forced his female victim into "a disgusting sexual act'' before escaping.
